The kangaroo mandrel , also kangaroo acacia ( Acacia paradoxa , Syn. : Acacia armata ) is a plant from the genus of Acacia ( Acacia ). The kangaroo thorn is native to Australia .

description

The kangaroo thorn is a woody plant; it grows as an upright shrub with a somewhat sparse habit and reaches heights of 1 to 4 meters. The brownish-gray bark is finely cracked, the more or less hairy branches are cylindrical and grooved flat.

The thorny, slender stipules are around 5 to 15 millimeters long. So-called phyllodes , i.e. flattened petioles, take on the function of the leaves . They are 0.8 to 3 centimeters long and 2.5 to 7 millimeters wide, lanceolate to narrowly elliptical in shape and straight to slightly curved. They are bald to hairy and the central rib like the ribs on the edge protrude prominently, the side ribs, however, remain indistinct. The leaf margins are often more or less wavy, the leaf tip is piercingly pointed. A small gland and a pulvinus up to 0.5 millimeters long are found near the base of the leaves .

Flowering time is July to November. One, rarely two inflorescences develop from the leaf axils . The mostly hairless flower stems are 6 to 20 millimeters long, the actual inflorescences are spherical heads with around 20 to 45 flowers . These have a diameter of 5 to 10 millimeters and are yellow to light yellow in color. The legumes are more or less straight, densely hairy, 2 to 7 centimeters long and 3 to 5 millimeters wide. The seeds are elongated, the funiculus occasionally filiform.

distribution

The kangaroo thorn is native to Australia in the states of Queensland , Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia , from culture it has become feral and naturalized in Tasmania .
