Kénadsa (قنادسة) is a city and the capital of the district of the same name in the province of Béchar in Algeria .
geography
Kénadsa is located on a rocky, flat plateau at an altitude of 784 m in the western Sahara . The Wadi Oued Meswar runs about six kilometers to the southeast . The only neighboring city is Bechar , about 20 kilometers to the east ; the border with Morocco runs 50 kilometers to the northwest on the great Erg .
history
The barren area was originally mainly used by nomads and shepherds. Kénadsa is mentioned for the first time in the 15th century as a resting place for caravans of long-distance trade and it began to grow.
Coal deposits began to be developed in the area around 1900 , and the site became a center of mining when mining began in the 1920s . With the growing prosperity of the place, irrigation measures could be taken and agriculture expanded.
In the 1940s, coal mining gradually declined and there was a renewed focus on cattle breeding and agriculture.
Economy and Transport
Today agriculture is the most important economic factor in Kénadsa. The community has a total of 1,850 hectares of arable land, of which just under 10% is regularly irrigated. Dates are mainly produced and the livestock are mainly sheep and goats, but also camels and cattle as well as poultry. The place is fully electrified and has its own sewer system.
A district road connects Kénadsa with Béchar and leads there to the national road 6. Béchar is also the nearest international airport and the Kénadsa long wave transmitter .
Education, culture and social issues
There are four primary schools in Kénadsa, but the general literacy rate is only 85%. There is a small infirmary that also offers obstetrics. There is also a cinema and three mosques.
