history

Kölnstrasse from Marktplatz, Kölntor in the background

At today's intersection of Hohenzollernstrasse / Schützenstrasse / Kölnstrasse was the Kölntor , first mentioned in 1361 , one of the five city gates of the former Düren city fortifications . The smallest city gate in Düren was a low square tower with a pyramid roof . After the destruction in 1543, the Kölntor was completely rebuilt in 1558 and in October 1586. After the medieval Kölntor was closed in 1817, the manufacturer Edmund Hoesch built a residential building with a gate passage, the so-called younger Kölntor. This was just as obstructive to the expansion of the city as the old gate. A legal dispute between the city and the owner Edmund Hoesch over the purchase and demolition lasted decades before an agreement was finally reached. On July 9, 1884, the younger Kölntor was closed and the way to the east was cleared. The street behind the city gate used to be called "Kölner Chaussee".

From 1908 to 1963, sailed tram the Dürener circular path (DKB), the Cologne road. The single-track route led from the market to Distelrath , and there was a stop at the old cemetery (today Adenauerpark). There was also a turnout right at the beginning of Kölnstrasse at the confluence with the market square.

The parish church of St. Peter Julian was in Kölnstrasse from 1964 to 2003.

Todays use

The main post office is at the intersection of Hohenzollernstrasse and Kölnstrasse . In the further course there is the evangelical cemetery Düren with many graves that are under monument protection . Opposite it is the old Catholic cemetery , which is now a park. There is the Hochkreuz Konrad-Adenauer-Park , which is also a listed building. On September 22, 2012, a sculpture named after Konrad Adenauer was inaugurated in Konrad-Adenauer-Park .

In 2016, the part of Kölnstrasse that forms the pedestrian zone was extensively renovated as part of the inner city master plan. The dealers in Kölnstrasse used the construction work for numerous advertising campaigns.
