Market (Düren)
The market in the district town of Düren ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a central square in the city center. Kölnstrasse, Oberstrasse , Kaiserplatz and Weierstrasse meet at the market. The square has been a pedestrian zone for years .
history
A wide variety of markets have been held on the market for more than 650 years . There is evidence of the Kornmarkt (also called the main or fruit market), cattle market, bread market, butter market, chicken market and wood market. The Kornmarkt was mentioned as early as 1361. The wealthy traders and citizens lived in splendid houses around the market . This is also where most of the hostels (inns) were located, where the sale of grain through the "wine drink" was made legally binding.
The square used to be called the “marketplace”. Over the years, today's short form "Market" established itself. There are no longer any houses on the market that date back to before the Second World War . Before the war, the square was the starting point for all tram lines on the Düren district railway .
The former town hall from 1520, which was bombed in the air raid on November 16, 1944 , in which the city center was completely destroyed, stood on the market and was later rebuilt on Kaiserplatz. The city administration's citizens' office is right next to this old location. Before that, from 1954 until the merger of the Stadt- und Kreissparkasse Düren in 2000, the main office of the Stadtsparkasse was housed.
A Marian column was first erected on the north side of the market square in 1857 . After the destruction in the war there was a new Marian column exactly a hundred years later. This was designed by Günter Haese and unveiled on October 11, 1957 by Aachen Bishop Johannes Pohlschneider .
The former officers' mess of the Belgian army is also located on the market square . The building, which was designed by the architect Benno Sommer in 1952, houses a restaurant. After the war, Düren was the largest Belgian garrison abroad. The dialect poet Joseph van der Giese from Düren was born in Markt 26 . A plaque is attached to this house .
Todays use
The weekly market takes place in the market square on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays . The square is also used for other markets and events such as the city festival and “Düren shines”. In October 2016, plans to redesign the market square were presented. The work was carried out as part of the 2017 inner city master plan.
