Benno summer
Benno Sommer (born February 18, 1922 in Düren ; † July 24, 2012 there ) was a German architect , designer and caricaturist . He played a key role in the reconstruction of the city of Düren after the air raid on November 16, 1944 .
After graduating from high school, he studied architecture at RWTH Aachen University from 1947 . During his studies he worked as a cartoonist for the Aachener Volkszeitung . His first architectural work was the reconstruction of the Germania-Lichtspiele , a cinema in Wirtelstrasse, which had been destroyed by the war . It opened on November 17, 1950. It has been used as a supermarket since it was closed.
Sommer built 14 more cinemas between Cologne and Brussels . There were also 36 medical practices as well as residential and commercial buildings in Düren alone. Some of summer's buildings are now under monument protection , such as B.
- the former officers' mess of the Belgian army in downtown Düren, built in 1952, or
- the tower with the casino and the canteen on the premises of the Zimmermann & Jansen company in Rölsdorf .
With his architecture, Bruno Sommer followed the aesthetic ideals of the Bauhaus .
