Robert Brown (born December 25, 1947 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats .

Life

Brown studied law at Aberdeen University and subsequently worked as a solicitor and legal advisor.

Political career

Between 1977 and 1992 Brown was chairman of the groups of the Liberal Party and then the Liberal Democrats in the Glasgow City Council. For the first time Brown came to the general election in October 1974 in national elections. He received in his constituency Rutherglen (later Glasgow Rutherglen ) but only 6.3% of the vote and thus the lowest percentage of votes. Although he was able to significantly increase his share of the vote in the 1979 , 1983 and 1987 general election , he missed the direct mandate in each case.

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 Brown ran for the constituency of Glasgow Rutherglen , but could not prevail against Janis Hughes of the Labor Party and the candidate of the SNP . Due to the election result, Brown received the only mandate on the regional electoral list for the Liberal Democrats in the electoral region of Glasgow and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In the parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 , he ran again for Glasgow Rutherglen, but was only able to win the second or third highest number of votes. However, he moved back into parliament as a list candidate for the electoral region. In the 2011 elections he lost his parliamentary seat.
