history

On January 17, 1785, the episcopal approval was given for the rector or pastor of St. Anna to consecrate the place in front of the city on Kölnstrasse as a new cemetery. The inauguration took place on May 26, 1786. It had to be expanded in 1825. As early as 1840, the upper part of Kölnstrasse between the Kölntor and the cemetery was paved, which was not exactly common at the time. A second cemetery expansion was necessary as early as 1842. The municipal cemetery has been designated as non-denominational since then. In the same year the former cemetery around the Anna Church was paved. 30 years later the burial ground was enlarged again. In 1876 the wrought-iron whorl's drinking cross from 1708 was set up in the town cemetery. It was not until 2008 that it returned to its original place. In 1877 a public fountain was created on the site and in 1885 the cemetery was expanded to double its area.

During the redesign of Ahrweilerplatz , which served as a cemetery for centuries, a large number of human remains came to light in 1890 . These were buried in the city cemetery. The area was devastated in the heavy air raid on November 16, 1944 . There have been no more burials in the village since 1948 . Three years later, the site was turned into a park. In 1965 the honorary grave of the mayor and honorary citizen of Düren Hubert Jakob Werners was moved from the old cemetery to the new Düren-Ost cemetery. The decision was made to transfer all dead to the new cemetery in consultation with the relatives.

In 1972 the redesign of the park began and in 1974 it was approved as Konrad-Adenauer-Park .
