The King Rama IX Park ( Thai : สวนหลวง รัชกาล ที่ 9 , short: สวนหลวง ร. 9 , pronunciation: [ sŭan lŭaŋ ráʧa-gaːn tîː 9 ], English: King Rama 9 Park) is a public park in the southeast of Bangkok in the Prawet district .

location

King Rama IX Park is located on Soi 103 (Side 103) of Thanon Sukhumvit (Sukhumvit Street) near Srinakharin Street and covers an area of ​​500 Rai (about 80 hectares ).

history

The park was created in 1987 on the occasion of the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) as part of the country's annual flower show and shows a large number of native plants. There is also an exhibition with works by the Thai king and an overview of his life and work. Every year in December, the park is adorned with countless flowers to mark the beloved king's birthday.

Exhibition and building

This part of the park covers about 21 rai , or about 3 hectares. The main building here is the Rajamangkala Hall, which was built in the style of the Rattanakosin era. The nine-sided building houses a permanent exhibition displaying the king's numerous projects along with royal devotional items. The hall is surrounded on both sides by overwhelming trees and flower beds, each with a fountain. The area in front of the main hall is called the "Garden of the Great King".

Botanical Garden

The botanical garden was created according to ecological considerations and forms the first comprehensive botanical garden in the country. This part of the park covers around 150 rai, or 22 hectares, and is divided into different areas that are surrounded by irrigation systems. Here you can relax or do botanical research.

reservoir

The reservoir is an artificial lake known as Prabang Kaeo Keb Nam and covers an area of ​​40 Rai, about 12 hectares. In accordance with the king's wishes, the lake was built as a flood protection area to reduce the risk of flooding in the capital's eastern suburbs. Water sports and cultural events are also held here.

Rommaniya garden

This garden area shows the natural beauty of Thailand on around 50 Rai, i.e. 7 hectares. The terrain has been shaped to reflect the typical streams, waterfalls, forests and mountains of the country. For example, a typical rainforest is shown, which has numerous species and types of rock from the country.

Sanan Rasdara

The site consists of 70 rai (10 hectares) of land that is mostly grassland. Here people can pursue sporting activities and attend seasonal festivals. Music festivals and concerts are also held here.

The water garden

The water garden covers an area of ​​40 rai, nearly 6 hectares, and is home to numerous species of fish and seabirds. All sorts of aquatic plants thrive in the shallow canals and the sparsely forested area that have been attractively built here.
