The Queen Victoria Monument

The Queen Victoria Memorial in the vineyards of Hochheim am Main was erected in 1854 to commemorate the visit of the British Queen Victoria as part of her trip to the Rhine in 1845.

Geographical location

The Queen Victoria Monument is located about two kilometers southeast of the city center in the Hochheim district in the middle of the Rheingau vineyard area Königin-Viktoria-Berg , with only five hectares of vineyards, an individual location that is only small, but widely known for its outstanding quality. The monument stands ten meters above the Main at a height of about 95 meters on a slope section sloping south to the bank of the Main and below a contained spring whose water is fed to a well on the south side of the monument. The Taunus Railway from Wiesbaden to Frankfurt am Main passes directly below the monument , so that train travelers can easily see it.

description

The monument has a rectangular plan of two meters by ninety centimeters and a height of about five meters. The top is adorned by four corner turrets. A neo-Gothic attachment sits on an embossed base. The front shows the inscription "KOENIGIN VICTORIA BERG". The royal coat of arms with lion and unicorn and the banner " DIEU ET MON DROIT " and an inscription plaque are arranged below . The inscription reads: “Her Majesty Victoria Queen of Great Britain and Ireland had the grace to give this vineyard her high name. In honor of the noble monarch and as a grateful reminder of such a gracious award, this memorial stone was erected by GM Pabstmann, Hochheim, May 24, 1854 ” . The reverse shows the relief of a wine press with vines, above the English crown and the inscription: "WINDSOR CASTLE V. DEC./ MDCCCL".

history

In 1845 Queen Victoria was on a trip to the Rhine. Together with her German husband Prince Albert , she visited Hochheim am Main on August 15, 1845. At the Dechantenruhe vineyard they found out more about Hochheimer wine and how it is grown. Hochheimer wine had long been known in England and was tasted as Hock . The then owner of the winery Georg Michael Papstmann then renamed the vineyard after Viktoria. The monument was inaugurated on May 24, 1854, Victoria's 35th birthday. The top wine from the Hupfeld Hochheimer winery is still called Queen Victoriaberg today . Rumors say that the saying “Good Hock keeps off the doc” ( good Hochheimer makes the doctor dispensable ) can also be attributed to Queen Victoria and her visit to Hochheim .

The monument will be extensively renovated in the foreseeable future. The restored monument is to be inaugurated on the 200th birthday of Queen Victoria.
