The Gambian monarchy was a parliamentary system of government in which a hereditary monarch was the sovereign of the Gambia and held the role of head of state from 1965 to 1970. Head of state since February 18, 1965 - with the independence of Gambia - Queen Elizabeth II , who was officially referred to as Queen of Gambia ( English Queen of Gambia ). You and other members of the British royal family performed various official functions in the Gambia and represented the country in other states.

Most of the sovereign rights in Gambia were exercised by the Governor General (from February 18, 1965 to February 9, 1966 by Sir John Warburton Paul and from February 9, 1966 to April 24, 1970 by Sir Farimang Singhateh ). The Gambian monarchy developed out of colonial relations with the United Kingdom , but was legally independent from the British monarchy . Gambia was granted independence (as Gambia Colony and Protectorate ) in 1965 under the Gambia Independence Act 1964 of the Parliament of the United Kingdom as an independent sovereign state.

After two referendums on a constitutional amendment , of which the first was unsuccessful because it did not achieve the required two-thirds majority , and the second was successful , the Gambia passed a new constitution on April 24, 1970 , with which the monarchy was abolished. Gambia became a republic within the Commonwealth, with the President of Gambia as head of state.

The Queen visited Gambia on December 3-5, 1961.
