Royal Opera (Copenhagen)
The Royal Opera ( Danish Operaen ) on the island of Holmen in Copenhagen is the Danish national opera and one of the most modern stages in the world. Institutionally, it is part of the Royal Theater .
The house is a donation from Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller and the “AP Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation” to the Danish state. Arnold Peter Møller was a co-founder of Mærsk , which is now Scandinavia's largest company .
The building was designed by Henning Larsen . Construction began in June 2001 and was completed on October 1, 2004. The opera house opened on January 15, 2005 with a special concert. Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the Danish Queen Margrethe II were present. The first opera performance, Verdi's Aida , took place on January 26, 2005.
In 2008 the building and the architects and engineers responsible received the Outstanding Structure Award from IABSE .
