Royal State Stud Kreuzvorwerk
The Königliche Landgestüt Kreuzvorwerk (also known as Gestüt Kreuz ) is a former state stud in Halle (Saale) . The horse breeding and husbandry facility, built at the end of the 19th century, is currently used as a residential complex. It is a listed building.
location
The former stud facility is located in Saxony-Anhalt in the city of Halle (Saale) in the Kröllwitz district. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Saale on sloping terrain. The university clinic of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is located in the immediate vicinity . The university's Weinberg Campus is also located next to the stud farm.
history
The stud was founded in 1888 and housed between 95 and 200 horses. As a state stud, it mainly housed breeding stallions. In 1960 the state stud was dissolved.
Until animal husbandry was abandoned at the end of 1990, parts of the stables were used for breeding bulls.
Kreuzvorwerk gained in importance as a breeding facility for (Belgian) draft horses . However, this explains, among other things, the decline of the stud, since with the increasing mechanization of agriculture, extensive cold blood breeding was no longer necessary.
The unusual name of the stud "Kreuzvorwerk" results on the one hand from the cross-shaped symmetrical arrangement of the entrances to the buildings (cross) and on the other hand from the original name for a large agricultural yard ( Vorwerk ).
architecture
The main building is a simple, two-story brick building on a hill near the Saale. It is designed in the form of a shortened horseshoe with an axis length of about 120 meters. To the east of the parade ground in the inner courtyard is the director's house in neo-renaissance style . There are also simple workers' apartments with gardens, meadows and a park. Newly built residential buildings have been integrated into the overall complex while maintaining symmetry.
Current situation
The entire listed complex was renovated and converted into condominiums and additional buildings were added. Construction work on the main building has largely been completed. The original impression of the complex has been preserved.
