The nature reserve Auf der Burg with a size of 1.38 hectares is located north of Berlar in the municipality of Bestwig . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Bestwig landscape plan. The landscape plan contains a time limit for designation. The regional plan envisages the NSG area as an “area for the above-ground extraction of mineral resources”. This means that NSG can be used as a quarry with a permit from the Lower Environmental Protection Agency and thus be blown away.

Area description

The NSG is made up of diabase rocks, boulders and overground dump with stunted oak-dominated forest cover. The mountain elm occurs sporadically . The NSG has a fern and moss flora typical of the location. In the eastern area heavily grassed and planted like coppice. The quarry of Diabaswerk Halbeswig GmbH & Co. KG is located directly on the edge of the NSG.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”. The landscape plan lists the protection purpose of the NSG: “Preservation of a geogenically determined special location because of the special nature of the staggered cliffs and their bizarre woody growth in the landscape; Safeguarding the autochthonous flora of the area as a potential gene pool for the later repopulation of the adjacent excavation site; Protection of these landscape functions from use-related interference; Preservation of a natural diabase exposure for geological reasons.
