NSG "Bestwiger Ruhrtal" between Bestwig and Velmede

The Bestwiger Ruhrtal nature reserve with a size of 83.92 hectares is located in the municipal area of Bestwig . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Bestwig landscape plan. The NSG is also partially designated as a FFH area Ruhr (DE-4614-303). The FFH area Ruhr covers areas of the Ruhr and Aue from the Ruhrquelle to Fröndenberg in the Unna district .

Area description

Bestwiger Ruhr valley

The NSG covers the entire Ruhr in the municipality. This area of the Ruhr between Wehrstapel in the west and Landesstraße 743 in the east is about 7.3 km long. The floodplain was included if it was not built on. Rare animal and plant species are found in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the Ruhr with its floodplains.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
