Hohenstein nature reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hohenstein nature reserve with a size of 3.23  hectares is located east of Untervalme in the municipality of Bestwig . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Bestwig landscape plan.

Area description

The NSG is a forest area where canyon forest communities are located in some areas. A rock up to 10 m high is located in the northwest area. The forest consists of red beech , oak, other hardwood species and spruce.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forest area with its species inventory.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was designated as a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
