Untere Elpe nature reserve

The nature reserve Untere Elpe with a size of 2.38  hectares is located south of Ostwig in the municipality of Bestwig . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Bestwig landscape plan. The area has also been part of the FFH area Ruhr (DE-4614-303) since 2004 . The FFH area Ruhr covers areas of the Ruhr and Aue from the Ruhrquelle to Fröndenberg in the Unna district and in individual cases also parts of tributaries of the Ruhr .

Area description

The NSG is the Elpe river and the floodplain .

Protection purpose

The NSG should protect the river and floodplain.

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
