The royal tombs of Neungsan-ri ( Korean : 능산리 ) consist of seven different tombs in Buyeo ( 부여 ), in Chungcheongnam-do ( 충청남도 ) Province , South Korea , dating from the Sabi period (538–660 AD) des Kingdom of Baekje ( 백제 ).

The tombs were placed under monument protection by the South Korean government in January 1963 as the 14th culturally significant site and on July 4, 2015, UNESCO added it to the list of world cultural heritage sites under the title: " Baekje Historic Areas " .

geography

Model of the plant

The tombs are in the formation of a triangle on the slope of a wooded 121  m high hill, around 3 km east of the city center of Buyeo. The city wall of Naseong runs a few hundred meters west of the burial mound. The area protected as a world cultural heritage covers 2.1  hectares , the protection zone around 26.5 hectares.

history

In 538 AD, King Seong ( 성왕 ) (523–554) moved the capital of the Baekje Kingdom from Ungjin ( 웅진 ) to Sabi ( 사비 ), today's Buyeo. Due to the constant attacks and threats from the kingdom of Goguryeo ( 고구려 ) from the north, the seat of government in the Gongsanseong fortress was no longer safe enough for him. As a result, the Royal Palace was built at the foot of Mount Busosan in Sabi, with the mountain, fortress and river as protection to the north. The city wall of Naseong protected the city to the east. The tombs were laid out during the Sabi period and are the only witnesses of royal burial in the then capital. A small prayer temple in honor of King Seong was built 200 meters west of the tombs.

Archaeological research

Archaeological studies were carried out on the graves in 1915 and 1917. Since the graves had been emptied by grave robbers many years earlier, no more significant finds could be made that could have assigned the graves to a particular king. Only the arrangement, architectural style, decoration and the location of the tombs suggest that they were used for kings. In some burial chambers, the ceiling paintings are particularly important, for which the burial chambers were closed again in order to be able to preserve them.
