The cup mussels ( Corbicula ; from Latin corbis = basket) are a genus from the family of cup mussels (Corbiculidae). The species Corbicula fluminea and Corbicula fluminalis, which are introduced to Europe and are often difficult to distinguish, are collectively referred to as the Asian mussel mussel .
biology
The animals show internal fertilization. The young hatch inside the parent animals ( ovoviviparous ) and are relatively small (much smaller than the externally similar-looking clam family of the Sphaeriidae).
Systematics
For the classification of the cup mussels in the context of the mussel system, cf. under classification of mussels .
The genus Corbicula currently includes (at least) the following described species:
- Corbicula africana (Krauss, 1848)
- Finely ribbed cup mussel ( Corbicula fluminalis (OF Müller, 1774))
- Coarsely ribbed cup mussel ( Corbicula fluminea (OF Müller, 1774))
- Corbicula japonica Prime, 1864
- Corbicula largillierti (Philippi, 1844)
- Corbicula leana (Prime, 1864)
- Corbicula linduensis Bollinger, 1914
- Corbicula loehensis Kruimel, 1913
- Corbicula madagascariensis Smith, 1882
- Corbicula matannensis Sarasin & Sarasin, 1898
- Corbicula moltkiana Prime, 1878
- Corbicula possoensis Sarasin & Sarasin, 1898
- Corbicula sandai Reinchardt, 1878
Occurrence
The different species of the genus Corbicula occur in the central and south / south-east part of Asia (Russia, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, the Middle East), in the central and south part of Africa and probably also in Australia. Individual species were introduced to Europe and North and South America in the 20th century and in some cases formed very strong populations.
