The family of mussels (Corbiculidae) includes several genera of freshwater mussels , including the main genus Corbicula , which gives it its name (see mussels (genus) ). The oldest members of the family come from the Carnian ( Upper Triassic ).

Occurrence in Europe

In the Pleistocene , members of the mussel family were widespread in Central Europe. Bowls from this period can be found in the Mainz Basin and in the Netherlands . With the end of the last ice age, around 11,000 years ago, the representatives of the genus Corbicula died out in Europe. In the 20th century, however, some species, including the coarsely ribbed mussel mussel and the finely ribbed mussel mussel , both of which are often referred to as the Asian mussel mussel because of their difficulty in distinguishing them , were introduced into Europe.
