Artists - Critical Dictionary of Contemporary Art is periodically an encyclopedia , the artists of today presents. It was edited by Detlef Bluemler and Lothar Romain . Bluemler has been the sole editor since Romain's death.

It has been published every three months since February 1988 and includes the work of seven artists in each issue. Each booklet comprises 16 pages about the work of the artists, two printed pages of personal statements made by those concerned, an artist portrait and three double-page illustrations. The editor is Hans-Joachim Müller.

Artists - Critical Lexicon of Contemporary Art was published as an edition by WB -Verlag until 1996 and Bruckmann , since 1996 solely by Weltkunst-Verlag. The until then sole owner Springer-Verlag - under whose leadership the project was made possible in 1986 - initially sold to the investor Arques . In 2005 Zeitverlag took over the world art magazine section through its wholly owned subsidiary Zeitverlag Beteiligungs GmbH & Co. KG (since 2009 ZEIT Kunstverlag ) and thus also Artists - Critical Lexicon of Contemporary Art. In 2012 it was acquired by Kunsthandel Verlag .

The Critical Lexicon of Contemporary Art is in its 103rd edition (3rd quarter 2013). It contains monographs on Hans-Peter Feldmann, Julius Grünewald , Hösl & Mihaljevic, Wolfgang Kliege , Philip Loersch , Guido Nussbaum, Hans Schabus and Simone Westerwinter (= 98th edition). Monographs on Madeleine Dietz, Eckart Hahn, Zarina Hashimi, Dierk Maass, Steve McQueen, Gabriela Oberkofler, Wolf Pehlke , Francois Rouan, Rafael, Rozendaal (= 103rd edition)
