The coastal road Fv17 ( Fylkesvei 17) runs between Steinkjer and Bodø near or directly on the Norwegian Atlantic coast. The road leads through the landscapes of Namdalen , Helgeland and Salten . Numerous tunnels and six ferries are needed to cover the 650 km. The Arctic Circle is crossed on the Kilboghamn-Jektvik ferry. The Fv17 is an alternative to European route 6 (E6) on the drive north to Lofoten or the North Cape, but because of the scenic beauty it is also an independent travel destination. The Fv17 is paved throughout, developed as a landscape route and also suitable for bicycles. The Svartisentunnel, which is closed to bicycles, can be bypassed with a seventh ferry crossing.

Until December 31, 2009 the Fv17 was a Reichsstraße (Rv17).

The neighboring municipalities market the scenic route under the name Kystriksveien . Every year a free “travel guide” is published in which tourists can find lots of information about sights, but also information on ferry schedules and opening times.
