K. Rainer Massarsch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Rainer Massarsch (born December 31, 1943 ) is an Austrian civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .

Life

Massarsch studied at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and received his doctorate from the Royal Technical University (KTH) in Stockholm . He was then at the University of California, Berkeley and Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky at Lexington. He was professor for soil dynamics at the KTH, was in a large Swedish engineering office for foundation engineering and technical director in an international foundation engineering company. Today Massarsch works as a consulting engineer (in his company Georisk and Vibration).

He deals with soil dynamics (risks of vibrations, pile driving, traffic vibrations), earthquake engineering, geotechnical field investigations, soil improvement with vibratory compaction, vertical drainage, deep soil reinforcement. Several inventions come from him (resonance compaction, soil nails for foundations (foundation nailing), shielding of floor vibrations with inflatable pillows). He was involved in major international foundation projects (dams, airports, tunnels, ports, industrial plants) and in the rescue and restoration measures for Egyptian antiquities ( tomb of Nefertari , Colossi of Memnon ).

Massarsch was chairman of the ISSMGE's technical committee for geophysical tests (TC 10) and chairman of the Swedish committee for ground dynamics (Ground Vibrations) as well as chairman of the European standards committee (CEN / TC 288) for deep soil mixing and vertical drainage.

In 2004 he became an honorary member of the Swedish Geotechnical Society. In 2003 he held the Vienna Terzaghi Lecture (geotechnical engineering for the rescue of architectural monuments).

He is one of the founders of geoforum.com.
