Before KCLU first aired on October 20, 1994, listeners had a relatively small selection of regional and national news channels in the Ventura and Santa Barbara area. In particular, no important local events were reported. The California Lutheran University took the initiative and therefore supported the project at the start of KCLU. The station was well received. So the audience grew by 2006 from a few thousand listeners a week to almost 80,000.

In the early years, KCLU signed off at midnight with a pause in broadcast. Today is broadcast for 24 hours.

KCLU has received numerous awards for its reporting; through the Associated Press , the Los Angeles Press Club , the Radio Television News Directors Association of Northern California and the Radio and Television News Directors Association of Southern California, among others . KCLU has received 95 journalism awards over the past five years.

KCLU is largely financed by the audience.
