KD Avia ceased operations in 2009. The information in italics refer to the last status before the end of operation.

KD Avia was a privately owned Russian airline based in Kaliningrad and based at Kaliningrad-Khrabrovo Airport, which it operated . On September 14, 2009, the heavily indebted airline had its operating license revoked.

history

The joint stock company emerged in 2002 from the state company Kaliningrad Avia . It was given its current name in June 2005. The Russian state held a majority stake of 60% in the company, the remaining shares were held by its own employees.

In June 2005 the last Russian machine was decommissioned, until then the fleet consisted of up to ten Tu-134s and two Tu-154s .

In 2006, the company hit the headlines because of a review by the Russian public prosecutor's office regarding the airline's pricing policy and flight safety.

At ILA 2008, KD Avia announced that it had signed a letter of intent for 25 Airbus A319s . In the same year the airline ran into financial difficulties. A part of the shares became the property of a Petersburg creditor bank. The global financial and economic crisis in the second half of 2008 exacerbated the problems: passenger and freight volumes fell significantly.

On March 11, 2009, the airline ceased scheduled operations for the first time. The company has contacted the authorities several times because of its financial problems. “But in fact we didn't get any real support. The airline has exhausted its options to finance its operational activities, ”said press spokeswoman Jelena Penkowa. However, according to the airline's Russian website, operations have continued since March 13, 2009 after the government provided assistance. Despite this aid, the long-term survival of the airline was not ensured due to the over-indebtedness.

On September 1, 2009, KD Avia stopped selling tickets again due to over-indebtedness and the Russian aviation authority revoked its operating license on September 14, 2009. Since that date, KD Avia has been prohibited from operating commercial flights for the time being. Previously, KD Avia suspended all flights except for a few to Moscow and Kiev on September 4th.

The intention is to establish a new company, but scheduled operations should start in June 2011, but this did not happen. We are currently looking for shareholders who can provide the necessary capital. Kaliningrad is supposed to become the hub between Russia and the other European countries in a similar way as was the case with KD Avia. The plan is to use aircraft from the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 families.

aims

In the liner service, KD Avia connected Kaliningrad with Moscow and Saint Petersburg . In December 2005 the liner service from Kaliningrad to Berlin-Tegel was started. Since June 15, 2007, direct flights to Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, Düsseldorf, Vienna and Munich from Kaliningrad have been offered several times a week to some of the destinations daily. The company pursued the concept of turning Kaliningrad Airport in Khrabrovo into a hub for destinations in Europe on the one hand and destinations in the CIS countries on the other. This was attractive for air travelers from Western Europe, because at the time numerous Russian flight destinations of KD Avia were only served direct flights from a few European airports and changing trains in Moscow was often very inconvenient and time-consuming.

The crew managed a crash landing in which only a few of the 144 passengers were slightly injured. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair.
