The Kaliningrad Khrabrovo Airport ( Russian Храброво ) is an international airport in Kaliningrad , an exclave of Russia , of this and its capital Kaliningrad combines (until 1946 Koenigsberg) with the rest of Russia.

history

Before 1945, civil flights were handled at the Devau airport , which is close to the city and which the Soviet territorial administration continued to use after the Second World War. Another airport was built in Chernyakhovsk , the former Insterburg. At the end of the 1950s it turned out that these were no longer sufficient to cope with the increasing air traffic, since the modern machines required longer runways. It was decided to use the military airfield in Khrabrovo for civil flights. The Wehrmacht Air Force had established it as Powunden Air Base before the Second World War. Even at the beginning of the attack on Poland , Group II of Lehrgeschwader 1 flew their attacks from here. In 1962 the first scheduled flight took place from the airport, which was formerly built for the German Air Force. In 1973 a modern reception building was built. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , its handling capacities were also exhausted. In 2007, the first construction phase of a new terminal was opened, which meets the latest requirements.

From 1992 to 2009 the airport was the hub of KD Avia , which was the airport operator until 2008.

In 2018, surveys on renaming were carried out across Russia. One of the most promising namesake candidates for Kaliningrad was Immanuel Kant , which was criticized in Russia for being unpatriotic. Shortly before the end of the poll, it was modified so that President Putin had to personally approve the election. He decided to bear the name of Tsarina Elisabeth. Since May 31, 2019, the airport has been officially called Aeroport Chrabrowo Elisabeth Petrovich ( Russian: Аэропорт Храбро́во имени императрицы Елизаветы Петровны ).

Location and transport links

The airport is located near Chrabrowo (Powunden) north of the capital Kaliningrad (Königsberg) . You can get to the city from the airport by bus number 244-Э or by taxi. A new expressway, the Primorskoje Kolzo (coastal ring) from Kaliningrad to Zelenogradsk (Cranz) has been completed in 2009 and provides a direct connection for faster reaching the airport and the oblast capital.
