The KHD A4L 514 R is a two-axle diesel locomotive with a rod drive for light shunting. 175 copies of it were built by KHD from 1950 to 1960 and delivered to various industrial companies. The locomotive is one of the smallest locomotives built by KHD after the Second World War . Many locomotives are still around today (2020).

development

When the production of engines and diesel locomotives started at Deutz after the Second World War , the first successful vehicles from prewar production were built.

The locomotives of the A4L 514 R series were primarily delivered to companies in Germany for factory relocation. Abroad, they were used in Austria , Sweden , Belgium , Italy , Norway , Finland , Yugoslavia , the Netherlands and Luxembourg .

technology

The locomotive has a front end for the machinery and a driver's cab with rectangular windows behind it, but still the angular shape of the front end and the driver's cab. The lamps are placed on the buffer beam.

The air-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine is housed in the front end. The mechanical manual gearbox with four gears sits above the rear axle of the locomotive and drives it directly. The front axle is driven by means of a coupling rod. Originally they only had a handbrake.

commitment

Many larger companies with siding had such small locomotives to replace steam locomotives.

The machine works Esslingen and Westwaggon each had a KHD A4L 514 R for the factory shift .

Wanne-Herner Railway and Harbor 12

The Wanne-Herner Eisenbahn und Hafen received the number 12 locomotive . Like some other locomotives in the series, it was equipped with a Knorr type indirect brake . It was delivered in 1952 and has been preserved.

Other preserved locomotives

A locomotive from the beginning of the year is in the Rheinisches Industriebahn-Museum in Cologne after it was always used in Cologne. In the Rheinisches Industriebahn-Museum there is a second locomotive, which was delivered to the Essen coal mines in 1952 and was then in service with RAG Aktiengesellschaft . After working in various companies in Düsseldorf , she came to the Rheinische Industriebahn-Museum in 1993.

Some locomotives may still be used as shunting locomotives today.
