The type series KHD KS 55 B is a two-axle diesel locomotive with rod drive , which was designed for light shunting service. 70 copies of it were built by KHD from 1958 to 1968 and used in various industrial companies. The locomotive is one of the smallest locomotives built by KHD after the Second World War . Many locomotives in the series are still in existence today (2020).

development

From 1958 a new type program was set up at KHD , which no longer designated the locomotives according to the type of engine, but instead coded the intended use. The KS 55 B locomotive is the smallest locomotive in this series. Their designation means K for small locomotive, S for the drive type rod drive , 55 denotes the power of the motor in HP and B denotes the wheel arrangement of the locomotive.

They were primarily supplied to small to medium-sized companies in Germany, with some locomotives going to the Netherlands , Belgium and Luxembourg . The locomotive genus is the more powerful version of KHD A2L 514 R .

The locomotive in explosion-proof design for operation in hot plants has a different engine and is referred to as the KS 55 B ex series.

technology

The locomotive has a front end for the machine system and a driver's cab behind it. It belongs to the category of small locomotives and was implemented with a rod drive .

The air-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine, which was also used to re-power combustion railcars , is housed in the front end. The mechanical manual gearbox with four gears sits above the rear axle of the locomotive and drives it directly. The front axle is driven by means of a coupling rod. The locomotives have a mechanically operated locomotive brake that acts on the wheels.

The locomotives are a constructive continuation of the KHD A4L 514 R that was built in 1950 . On the occasion of the inclusion of the series in the new series, the design was changed from 1958. The KS 55 B differs from the KHD A4L514 in its rounded housing edges and the more modern lighting .

commitment

The locomotives were robust and reliable in use and some of them are still in operation today (2020).

KHD No. 56863

The locomotive was delivered to the Altenessener Bergwerks-AG in Essen . At a time that was not exactly known, it was sold on to a Philips subsidiary in Essen and in 1979 to Küppersbusch AG in Gelsenkirchen . In the 1980s, the locomotive changed hands twice: first to Newag AG in Oberhausen and then to Kässbohrer Fahrzeugwerke GmbH in Senden . In 2011 it was visually refurbished in Berlin and is now (2020) a memorial in Freital-Potschappel .

KHD No. 57481

The locomotive was delivered to Siemens in Karlsruhe in 1962 . It was in use until the 1990s and was then erected as a memorial at Vossloh AG in Werdohl , after being transferred to the city of Werdohl in 2014 at another location in the city.

KHD No. 57630

The locomotive was delivered to Mainz-Mombach as a KHD factory locomotive in 1963 and was sold to a metal dealer in Ludwigshafen-Rheingönheim at an unknown date . It has been preserved and is located on the Mannheim Historical Railway .

KHD No. 58229

The locomotive was sold to Klöckner-Werke in Düsseldorf in 1963 and was handed over to Hoberg & Driesch in the 1980s . In 1984 it came to a branch of the plant in Kornwestheim and was given the internal number 45 . The locomotive has been owned by an interest group for customs and technology in Sontheim an der Brenz since 2013 .
