The KHD T4M 525 R are two-axle diesel locomotives with rod drive , which were designed for light shunting service. They were built by Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) from 1953 to 1955 and used by various private railways in Germany and Europe. Several locomotives in the series have been preserved.

development

The locomotives were created at a time when the engine designation at KHD was identical to the locomotive designation. The basis of their name was the introduction of a new engine series, which was designed as a water-cooled two-stroke engine with V-shaped cylinders. The V-arrangement made it possible to lower the height of the engines and thus lower engine hoods to improve the view of the route for the train driver. The development initially involved the construction of 25 locomotives called KHD T4M 525 R . Around 1957 were used for the Köln-Bonner railway locomotives obtained with an engine power of 240 to 260 hp, which were identical in dimensions and the designation KHD T4M R 625 received.

The KHD T4M 525 R locomotives also appear in the literature as the KS 225 B type, but there was no classification of the locomotives according to design in 1953.

The following were delivered to Germany:

The remaining locomotives were delivered abroad; six to Italy , three to Sweden and one to Turkey .

technology

The locomotives were designed like the Wehrmacht locomotive WR 200 B 14 with two axles that were driven by jackshafts and coupling rods arranged between the axles . The cab was at the rear of the locomotive. Compared to the pre-war version, the height of the front end could be reduced. The diesel engine was a four-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine called T4M 525 R . It was water-cooled and could be started with compressed air. As a power transmission was fluid transmission from Voith used. In the locomotives of the Ruhr-Lippe-Eisenbahnen a gearbox with the designation L 33 y hydr was used, it could be switched pneumatically and hydraulically.

The locomotives were often later equipped with the more powerful T4M 625 R engine, which led to confusion about the origins of the locomotives and prompted the manufacturer to introduce a new type range in 1959. Originally the locomotives were equipped with simple headlights, later they received new headlights with integrated tail lights.

commitment

The use of the locomotives was for easy shunting and handover over short distances.

Cologne-Bonn Railways V3 – V5

KBE received its three locomotives in 1953 and designated them as V3 – V5 . The V4 was decommissioned in 1977 and scrapped in 1982.

The other two locomotives were taken over by the company Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln . The V3 was sold to the Netherlands in 1997 and scrapped there in 2004. The V5 is restored in the KBE design in the Wesseling Railway Museum .

Westfälische Landes-Eisenbahn VL 0601-0602

The WLE bought two locomotives from the Ruhr-Lippe-Eisenbahnen in 1975/1976 , the D 53 and D 54. These were designated as VL 0601-0602 . A third locomotive was taken over as a spare part donor. The VL 0602 was the mid-1980s to a private individual in Brueggen . Her last recordings are from 2009 in the Netherlands. The VL 0601 was used in museum service from the mid-1980s, including on the Minden Museum Railway and the Hamm Museum Railway . It was erected in 2013 as a memorial at the Stadtlohn Railway Museum.

British Army of the Rhine

The locomotive with the KHD factory number 55880 , one of the six locomotives of the British Army of the Rhine , has been preserved as a museum locomotive. After various assignments in Germany, she came to the Ostfriesland coastal railway museum and drove there until around 2004. It was then transferred to the Hasetal Haselünne railway friends , where it received the NVR number 98 80 3440 019-8 in the German vehicle registration register in 2007 .
