Ka (rapper)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ka (born August 11, 1972 ; real name Kaseem Ryan ) is an American rapper and producer from Brownsville , Brooklyn ( New York ).

biography

In 1998 he started his career with the groups Nightbreed and Natural Elements. In 2008 he released his first album Iron Works , which he distributed among friends and relatives. By his own admission, he had no intention of making it big at the time. However, one of his friends gave his album to GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan , who liked the album so much that he wanted Ka as a feature on his fifth studio album, Pro Tools . Ka accepted the offer and the song Firehouse was the result .

In 2012, his second studio album , Grief Pedigree , was released, which today, even if it failed to land commercial success, is considered a classic in the underground hip-hop scene. His third studio album The Night's Gambit was released in 2013 and his fourth album Honor Killed the Samurai in 2016 , both albums praising Ka for his poetic and complex lyrics. The website HipHopDX listed his album Honor Killed the Samurai in 14th place of the "20 best rap albums of 2016".

About his music, Ka says on his website: “When you start rhyming, you should bring up relevant, personal topics. I decided a long time ago to make music just for love. If you can make good money from your art, that's a nice thing. But money should never be the reason for your art. You make art because you can't do anything else. "

controversy

Ka hit the headlines in August 2016, shortly after the release of his fourth long player Honor Killed the Samurai , when a journalist for the tabloid New York Post was able to track down Kas's occupation. Accordingly, Ka is a firefighter with the New York Fire Department and has the rank of captain . In the report, Ka is criticized for criticizing and insulting the police in his songs on the one hand, but on the other hand working for the New York authorities himself. Shortly after the article was published, Ka wrote on his Twitter page: “With love comes hate ... can't have one without the other. Be prepared for both. "(German:" With love comes hate ... you cannot have one without the other. Be prepared for both. ").

Spin magazine criticized the New York Post article . The journalists would take Ka's texts out of context and fail to recognize their context. Rapper El-P announced on social media that he would never interview the New York Post again. The journalists who wrote the article should, in his opinion, wonder how many lives they have saved instead of trying to destroy one.
