The Kahlenbergstift was a hospital in Magdeburg 's Stadtfeld West district .

history

The foundation was established in 1883 by the Magdeburg businessman August Wilhelm Kahlenberg (1801–1883). As early as 1881, the later Red Cross parent company Kahlenbergstiftung began training nurses in the house "Zum schwarzen Adler" at Thränsberg 37b, under the direction of Theodor Sendler (1819–1896) by setting up the left half of the upper floor as a clinic for 12 to 15 patients . From 1887 to 1896, the foundation built one of the city's first hospitals in the then newly emerging Wilhelmstadt district, later Stadtfeld. It also served as a nursing home and for training in nursing. Here Emanuel Aufrecht worked as a teacher. Johannes Benjamin Brennecke operated on at the clinic. Theodor Sendler (1819-1896) took over the management of the internal department, his son Paul (1848-1907) that of the surgical department. From 1913 to 1945 Max Penkert headed the gynecological and obstetric department of the Kahlenbergstift.

The hospital was badly hit in air raids during World War II , but was soon repaired. There were departments for internal medicine , gynecology , surgery, and urology . In 1957, all departments moved to the Magdeburg Medical Academy , today's Magdeburg University Hospital . In return, the military hospital of the Soviet armed forces moved from the grounds of the academy to the Kahlenbergstift.

With the withdrawal of the Soviet army in the early 1990s, the history of the Kahlenbergstift as a hospital ended. The historical buildings were placed under monument protection, but no subsequent use was made.

In the mid-1990s, a company from Baden-Württemberg acquired the site. To remove contaminated sites, large amounts of the soil were replaced. The renovation of the Kahlenbergstift was postponed again and again due to the enormous investment requirement, so that the building substance deteriorated significantly. At the beginning of March 2011 there was a fire in the building complex. Then, in April 2011, the demolition of the historic buildings began. Only the original Kahlenberg Foundation lettering has been preserved and is set into a wall on site.

As early as 1998, the Kahlenberg-Stift residential park with 208 condominiums in four-story residential buildings was built on the northern part of the site . The design was carried out by the architects Hanfried Schütte / Culmann + Wedemeyer .
