Kai-City Kiel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kai-City Kiel is a former shipyard and now partly residential and service area and partly industrial wasteland in Kiel . It is on the Kieler Hörn and is at the Germaniahafen . This means that the Kai-City Kiel lies between the Kiel city center (west bank) at the main train station and the east bank (district Kiel- Gaarden ). The Kai-City was a decentralized Expo 2000 project on the subject of inner-city living and working on the water. So far, only component B has been created. Further construction phases are planned.

History of origin

For decades, the area east of the Hörn was used industrially and was inaccessible to passers-by. At that time, the fjord drew a border to the busy center. After the area was rededicated as a residential and service area, this is where a component of the new concept comes into play: the Kai-City Kiel should connect the west and east banks. The Hörnbrücke was built for this purpose. The Hörnbrücke is a three-part folding bridge (three - way bascule bridge ) for pedestrians over the Hörn. It was completed in 1997 and connects the city center on the west bank of the Hörn from Kiel Central Station with the Gaarden-Ost district . This also ensures the connection between the west bank and the Germaniahafen including the adjacent high-rise center and the Norway quay on the east bank. The Kai-City Kiel project was intended to turn the old industrial site into a modern residential and service center. So far, however, only component B with an office, residential and commercial building row has been created. The so-called “Schmidbau”, a high-rise in this construction phase, is also located here. Since the renovation, a green promenade has been running around the Hörn; the center of the facility is the Germaniahafen. Old ships are being repaired in the museum harbor; roadworthy models, however, find an attractive berth here.

The high-rise center at Germaniahafen

As the first part of the Kai-City Kiel project, the high-rise center at Germaniahafen was opened in April 2007 . The first construction phase north of the Germania harbor is divided into two sections. These areas are separated above ground by an incision with a generous flight of stairs and access to the Norwegenkai, but contain a common basement. The high-rise center comprises a 14-storey high-rise with a north-facing office tower and 58 south and west facing apartments with a view of Kiel city center and the Kiel Fjord . A row of shops along the harbor basin , a restaurant with outdoor seating and an ice cream parlor with a view of the Hörnbrücke should contribute to the revitalization of the new city center.
