Origin and history

The ancestors were medium-sized Japanese dogs. The main area of ​​distribution is the former province of Kai , an area enclosed by mountains. The brindle coat is characteristic of this dog, which is one of the top dogs . In 1934 it was declared a "natural monument".

The size of the Kai male is given in the breed standard as 53 cm, with minor deviations being tolerated. Bitches are 48 cm shorter than the males. The weight is not specified in the standard. The coat color is black or brindle (the puppies are monochrome for up to a year). Dogs' hair is hard and straight with a soft, thick undercoat . The ears are medium-sized upright and slightly tilted forward. High set rod , thick, strong rolled or curved like a sickle carried over back.
