Kaisei Ichirō ( Japanese 魁 聖 一郎 ; * December 18, 1986 in São Paulo as Ricardo Sugano ) is a Brazilian sumo wrestler in the Japanese Makuuchi division.

Sumo career

Sugano joined the Tomozuna-beya stable in 2006 and was given the ring name Kaisei Ichirō (Ichirō was the first name of his Japanese grandfather). Kaisei ended his first two professional tournaments with a 6-1 record and in both cases only lost to the eventual winner. After only two tournaments, he was promoted to the Sandanme division. There he was initially unable to dominate and in 2007, among other things, received three make-koshi in a row. After a 6-1 in January and a 5-2 in March 2008, Kaisei was finally promoted to the Makushita division relatively quickly . Despite a successful Makushita debut (5-2), he was demoted to the Sandanme a few months later, but managed to get promoted straight away. In September 2009 Kaisei went undefeated for the first time in a tournament (7-0). However, he lost the decisive duel for the tournament victory against the later Komusubi Gagamaru. In the first half of 2010, he scored 5-2 three times in a row. Then he was allowed to compete in the second highest division ( Jūryō ). The Kachi-koshi (8-7) on his Jūryō debut was followed by a tight Makekoshi of 7-8. At his third tournament in Jūryō, he then reached an 11-4 record. As a result, he moved together with Takayasu , Toyohibiki and Tochinowaka in a four-man playoff for the title. In the semifinals he defeated Tochinowaka and met the former Maegashira 2 Toyohibiki in the final . Kaisei prevailed in the end and won his first and so far only yusho. In May 2011 he made his debut as Maegashira 16 in the Makuuchi Division and only received his first loss against Tochinoshin on day 10 . Due to his successful record, he got opponents of higher rank in the last few days (including Maegashira 1 Gōeidō and Komusubi Kakuryū ) and lost his last four fights. Ultimately, he was able to post a record of 10-5 and received his first kantō-shō for this performance . At the beginning of 2012, Kaisei had to go to the Jūryō division again after four make-koshi in a row, but rose again immediately with a 10-5. At the Nagoya Basho in 2012, he scored an 11-4 as a maegashira 8 . For this he was then awarded the Kantō-shō for the second time in his career and also promoted to Maegashira 1 (highest career rank). On the first day of the Aki Basho 2012, Kaisei defeated an Ōzeki for the first time with Baruto . On the last day of the tournament he was defeated by Hōmashō and only thereby missed the jump into the San'yaku ranks. In March 2013 he disappointed with a weak 3-12 record and had to leave the upper maegashira ranks again. Four months later he made an impressive return with an 11-4 (Jun-Yusho). From September 2013 to March 2015, Kaisei moved ten tournaments in a row between the ranks Maegashira 3 and Maegashira 6 before slipping down a little lower. At the Natsu Basho 2015 he led the field with Yokozuna Hakuhō with a 10-1 record after eleven days , but lost his last four fights and finished the tournament with 10-5. With that he made the jump back to the rank of Maegashira 3 . However, he was unable to keep this up and only scored 6-9 in both July and September.
