The imperial oak

The imperial oak is a memorial tree in the Burgholz state forest in the Wuppertal district of Cronenberg in the Küllenhahn district .

The emperor oak was on 14 June 1871 by Prima leaders of the Elberfeld gymnasium to commemorate the founding of the German Empire planted and the Franco-German War. The contemporary press reports in its Saturday edition of June 17, 1871:

An emperor oak was in the Königl. Forste Burgholz recently planted at the instigation of the local forester Mr. Weth and at his invitation the primary students of the local grammar school under the leadership of the director, Dr. Hoche, and the teacher's Dr. Greeven went there to hold an inauguration ceremony, which took place at the forest area decorated with flags with lectures and celebratory songs in a suitable manner ... "

- TA of June 17, 1871

The oak tree framed in a cast iron fence is located directly on the route of the Elberfeld – Cronenberg (“ Burgholzbahn ”) railway line established in 1891 on a road named after the tree “ Zur Kaisereiche ”. As the tree grew and flourished, the artfully forged iron grating deteriorated more and more from corrosion . In the spring of 1968 the inscription plaque was reported as stolen. In the same year the blacksmith Ernst Sopp from Hahnerberg received the order from the city of Wuppertal to repair the fence and at the same time to put up a new plaque. The inscription on the original plaque is only partially visible in old photos and was shorter than the new one and probably read:

"Emperor oak planted
by students of the
Elberfelder Gymnasium
on June 14, 1871"

- Christians Balewski: För Schwatte, Witte on Küllenhahner . Wuppertal 1985, p. 198.

The tree was a popular meeting place from the start. In the past, residents of the Küllenhahn district moved to this oak on May 1st every year and socially commemorated the day here in the local recreation area. A nearby hiking car park on the tree is the starting point for many guests of the Staatsforst Burgholz. The Burgholz tunnel road tunnel has been crossing the site beneath the empire oak since 2004 .

The current sign on the fence now bears the inscription :

"To commemorate
the founding of the empire
on Jan. 18, 1871,

planted by the primary
school students of the Elberfelder Gymnasium
on June 14, 1871"
