Fossil finds
In the area of the Xiaolongtan coal mine, fossils have been discovered since 1956 that are 10 to 8 million years old and are interpreted as early relatives of the orangutans living today . The fossils were initially assigned to the genus Dryopithecus as Dryopithecus keiyuanensis and later to the genus Ramapithecus ; however, since 1987 they have been listed as an independent genre. The Xiaolongtan finds have since been placed as Lufengpithecus keiyuanensis in the genus Lufengpithecus .
