Kalambaka ( Greek Καλαμπάκα ( f. Sg. ); Alternative transcription Kalampaka also Kalabaka ) is a city in the Greek region of Thessaly . It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Meteora , which has been the second largest Greek municipality in area since 2011 with around 1,650 km².

The city of Kalambaka is located at the foot of the Meteora monasteries in the northwesternmost part of the plain of Thessaly, which is formed by the Pinios and its tributaries. The municipality extends over about 48 km² from the Meteora monasteries to the northeast of the city on the opposite side of the river Pinios to the northeastern ridges of the Koziakas, which borders the Thessalian plain to the west and represents the eastern beginning of the Pindos Mountains.

The municipality of Kalambaka includes the two villages of Agia Paraskevi and Vitoumas located south on the other side of the Pinios. The city of Kalambaka itself has 8330 inhabitants.

The national road 6 runs through the southwestern part of the city, which in sections is identical to the European road 92 and connects Igoumenitsa on the Ionian Sea in the west with Volos on the Pagasitic Gulf in the east.

Kalambaka is the end point of the Volos – Kalambaka railway line coming from Volos via Paleofarsalos . There are daily intercity connections to Athens and regional trains to Paleofarsalos on the Piraeus – Thessaloniki railway line .

Town twinning

A town partnership has existed between Kalambaka and Schwabach in Bavaria since 2002 .
