Kaletepe Deresi 3

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kaletepe Deresi 3 is an archaeological site in Anatolia , which is located in the area of the 2143 m high volcano Göllü Dağ in the Niğde province on the southern edge of Cappadocia . Obsidian , a vitreous volcanic material that is suitable for the manufacture of tools and weapons, was extracted there 800,000 years ago .

Three layers with a thickness of over 7 m could be assigned to the middle , one to the Old Paleolithic . Thus Kaletepe was for a long time the only site from the Acheuleans in Anatolia and at the same time the one in Turkey that covered the longest period. In addition to stone tools, such as rhyolite - choppers , Obsidian fist wedges and -beilen and Cleavern found from the younger strata a piece of pine with some teeth of an extinct type of horse.

The shape and mining technique of the younger blade cores have parallels in the Fertile Crescent , especially in Syria. In the earliest Neolithic, the keel-shaped cores apparently served to obtain standardized blades; real expeditions from Syria could have actually triggered the Neolithization in the region. Accordingly, the craftsmen came to the region with their cattle and grain. However, the technology could also have been developed on site.

The finds from Kaletepe are exhibited in the Niğde Archaeological Museum .
