Kalle Kurg (born May 25, 1942 in Tartu ) is an Estonian writer , literary critic and translator .

life and work

Kalle Kurg was a correspondent for the Estonian local newspaper Pärnu Kommunist from 1958 to 1961 . He completed his studies in Estonian Philology at the State University of Tartu ( Estonian Tartu Riiklik Ülikool ) in 1966 .

From 1967 to 1968 Kurg worked in the editorial department of the magazine Eesti Loodus . He then worked for two years as an editor at the Estonian state television ETV. In 1975 he joined the Estonian SSR Writers' Union . From 1971 Kurg was employed by the Estonian literary magazine Looming , of which he was editor-in-chief from 1976 to 1988.

In 1991/92 Kurg was head of the literary editorial team at ETV and editor-in-chief of the cultural magazine Sina ja mina . In 1996 he became director of the Estonian publishing house Ilo , and from 1998/99 editor-in-chief of the art publishing house Kunst . From 2000 to 2005 he directed and designed his literary program Ütle, mis sul on in the public-law Klassikaraadio , in which he read his own novellas twice a month.

Since the late 1950s, Kurg has emerged as a cultural philosopher, essayist, theater and literary critic and translator from German (including poems by Hermann Hesse ), English and Finnish. In 1999 he published the volume of poetry Pimeduse värvid . He also wrote numerous dramaturgical texts (including the pantomime Mimeskid , which was premiered in 1981) as well as contributions to radio broadcasts.
