Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag was a Swedish railway company . She was the builder, owner and operator of the Kalmar – Berga railway line (Kalmar – Berga Järnväg, KBJ).

history

Since Kalmar were connected to the railway network in 1874 via the Kalmar – Emmaboda and Oskarshamn railway in the same year via the Nässjö – Oskarshamn railway, the need for a coastal line from Kalmar south towards Blekinge and north became a suitable point on the route between Nässjö and Oskarshamn recognized.

In 1881 the provincial government ( Swedish Länsstyrelsen ) of the Kalmar district proposed to conduct a thorough investigation into the possible railroad expansion in the region. The Landshövding of Kalmar län , JL Edelstam, called together some interested persons for a meeting in Kalmar on January 31, 1883, where "the construction of a railway in the southern and central parts of the district" was discussed. There it was decided to concentrate primarily on a connection between the Kalmar – Emmaboda and Nässjö – Oskarshamn railway lines. A plan drawn up by the captain of CH Öhnell from Väg- och vattenbyggnadskåren was presented, describing the route between Kalmar and Berga. It contained three alternative routes, via Geltorp , via Helgesbo and via Gubbemåla . The route via Helgesbo was preferred. In addition, it was decided to set up a committee to raise funds for a thorough investigation and the drawing up of plans and cost proposals for a railway between Kalmar and Berga.

Öhnell was commissioned to carry out this investigation. He then made two proposals, one of which is a standard gauge railway line with a light superstructure, the other a narrow gauge track in the track width was mm 891st The narrow-gauge line was estimated at 1,897,000 crowns . The proposal was discussed in a committee meeting on September 16, 1885, whereupon it was decided to wait and in the meantime to continue working out the two proposals more precisely.

At the end of 1886 the estate manager JA Leidholm expressed the wish that Landshövding Edelstam should raise the question of a Kalmar – Berga route. The provincial government discussed this on July 27, 1886 at a meeting in Kalmar, but expanded the problem to include a route from Kalmar to Blekinge. After the meeting, a committee should be set up to further study the various proposals. However, this was denied, as was an application two years later.

Föreningen for Kalmar läns Östra järnvägs byggande

In the summer of 1891, JA Leideholm and G. Jonsson, Member of the Reichstag, made a new attempt to raise money from the Landsting ( German  Provincial Parliament ) for the survey for the route south from Berga. The Landsting decided to pay 1000 crowns, whereupon wholesaler Johan Jeansson offered to take over the remaining amount that might be necessary.

On October 1st, 1891, Föreningen för Kalmar läns östra järnvägs byggande was founded. The members included, among others, the Landshövding CA Fagerlund, the estate manager JA Leidholm and the wholesaler Joh. Jeansson. E. Westerberg commissioned the company to submit a new proposal for the railway line between Berga and Kalmar. This - he referred to the original proposal by Öhnell - described a 78 km long narrow-gauge railway with a track width of 891 mm and was planned with 2,282,000 kroner.

concession

In March 1892, Fagerlund, Jeansson and JM Ekströmmer applied for a concession for a railway line based on Westerberg's proposal. It was stated that the concession would be given to a future company called Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag . On September 16, 1892, the concession was granted with the conditions for the construction of the line and the framework dates for construction to begin on June 1, 1895 and completion on October 1, 1897 .

Financing proved difficult and was not completed until 1895, when the state guaranteed a loan of 900,000 kroner under certain conditions. In the meantime, the Föreningen för Kalmar läns Östra järnvägs byggande had asked the king to extend the dates by one year, so that the route did not have to be finished until October 1, 1898.

Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag

In the first half of 1895 shares were subscribed for the agreed minimum amount of 600,000 crowns. On August 6, 1895, the constituent general assembly of Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag could be held. The first board of directors consisted of the landowner Fagerlund, Freiherr Chr. Rappe, administrative manager John Jeansson (son of the wholesaler Joh. Jeansson), captain W. Jung and major CG Hult. The final financing came from a bank loan of 1,200,000 kroner.

A contract for the construction of the line was signed with the engineer Carl Johan Jehander , and the construction of the line began on March 24, 1896. The construction went without major difficulties and on December 4, 1897 the Kalmar-Berga Järnväg (KBJ) was opened for public goods and passenger traffic.

Through the Kalmar – Berga Järnväg, Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag became part of the owners of Kalmar Verkstadsaktiebolag, which was founded in 1902 .

The Company had two subsidiaries: Mönsterås nya Järnvägsaktiebolag (MAJ) 1910-1940 and Östra Småland Järnväg (ÖSmJ) between 1932 and 1937. The latter was established to the Ruda-Finsjö-Oskarshamns Järnvägsaktiebolag and järnvägsaktiebolag Ruda Älghults from Riksgäldskontoret to take over after the two companies went bankrupt .

The ÖSmJ itself went bankrupt in 1936. Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag then bought the company's two former railway lines at a public auction . Thereafter, the operation of the lines of the two predecessor companies was combined with that of the Kalmar – Berga railway line in order to use the vehicles on the common route network.

As part of the general nationalization of the railways in Sweden , the Swedish state bought the Kalmar – Berga line and Mönsterås nya Järnvägsaktiebolag in 1940 and transferred them to Statens Järnvägar , and Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag was dissolved. KBJ's stake in Kalmar Verkstad was also sold to the state.
