The Oskarshamn – Älghult railway was a Swedish narrow-gauge line with a gauge of 891 mm, which led from Oskarshamn to Älghult .
It consisted of the two sections of the route Ruda – Oskarshamn of the former Ruda – Finsjö – Oskarshamns Järnvägsaktiebolag and Ruda – Älghult of the Ruda – Älghults järnvägsaktiebolag . The two parts of the route were operated from 1932 by Östra Smålands Järnväg .
Östra Smålands Järnväg
The Östra Småland Järnväg was a subsidiary of Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag that existed only from 1932 to 1936. It was founded to take over Ruda – Finsjö – Oskarshamns Järnvägsaktiebolag and Ruda – Älghults järnvägsaktiebolag from Riksgäldkontoret after the two companies went bankrupt in 1931 .
The ÖSmJ itself went bankrupt in 1936. Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag then bought the company's two former railway lines at a public auction . Thereafter, the operation of the lines of the two predecessor companies was combined with that of the Kalmar – Berga railway line in order to use the vehicles on the common route network.
The parent company Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag , founded in 1895 , already owned the Kalmar – Berga railway line. In the course of its existence it had two subsidiaries, Mönsterås nya Järnvägsaktiebolag (MÅJ) between 1910 and 1940 and Östra Smålands Järnväg (ÖSmJ) between 1932 and 1937.
vehicles
ÖsmJ took over locomotives 1, 3, 4 and 5 of Ruda – Finsjö – Oskarshamns Järnvägsaktiebolag for operation . In addition, another steam locomotive and a shunting tractor were procured.

nationalization
The Kalmar läns östra järnvägsaktiebolag was as well as their subsidiary Mönsterås nya Järnvägsaktiebolag on 1 July 1940, the scope of the general railway nationalization in Sweden by the State, the route network was in Statens Järnvägar integrated.
Passenger traffic increased during the Second World War , so that passenger trains pulled by steam locomotives were replaced by rail buses . On the Oskarshamn – Älghult – Brittatorp – Växjö line there were through trains.
The extensive freight transport was carried out with tank locomotives of the Np series, which were replaced by newly built Gp tank locomotives in the 1950s . The pair of freight trains 9811/12 drove with this series until the closure of through freight traffic in 1963 and was the last pair of narrow-gauge freight trains in Sweden to run regularly with steam locomotives.
Shutdown
On September 29, 1963, all traffic on the Ruda – Älghult– (Brittatorp) line ended, as did freight traffic between Oskarshamn and Kvillegärde.
On July 1, 1966, passenger traffic between Oskarshamn, Kvillegärde and Ruda was discontinued. In 1970, freight traffic between Kvillegärde and Ruda was stopped when Ackumulator AB Jungner stopped transporting goods by rail.
The line was dismantled in 1968 between Oskarshamn and Skorpetorp and between Ruda and Älghult. The last part between Skorpetorp and Ruda followed in late 1970 / early 1971.
Remnants of the route
Parts of the embankment are used as a footpath or bicycle path.
