history

Calvary

A contract dated September 15, 1726 obliged Jakob Seer, who came from Eggenburg , to complete the crucifixion group , consisting of Jesus Christ, the two thieves, St. Magdalena, Mary and Johannes, by the beginning of Lent in 1727 . There is no evidence of who created the other groups. But they probably also come from Jakob Seer.

The client for the construction of the Calvary is not known. But since the pastor of Retz is the second contractual partner alongside Jakob Seer, either he himself or the monastery in Sankt Pölten placed the order. The city of Retz probably provided the space required for the construction.

The Retz Kalvarienberg , built from Zogelsdorf stone , does not consist of the usual stations of the cross, but follows the laws of the painful rosary after Jesus said goodbye to his mother Mary . A so-called “holiday torture” is followed by a scene of the Mount of Olives, the flagellation, the crowning of thorns, the Veronica scene and finally the group of the cross.

Holy grave

Not the spatial, but thematic end of the Way of the Cross is a holy grave built in 1727 in the parish church of St. Stephen . The space required for this was created by erecting a square vault over belt arches on pillars in the originally Gothic tower hall near the altar.

Staged around the coffin are Joseph of Arimathäa and Nicodemus, who put Jesus' body in the coffin, as well as Mary, Johannes and Magdalena. Sandstone, which was covered with an ivory imitation, was used as the material for the larger-than-life figures.

The dark walls of the Holy Sepulcher form the background to the light stucco work , which depicts Jesus on the cross and the descent from the cross. As with the figures, the artist is also unknown here.

Originally, the access to the Holy Sepulcher, which was closed with a baroque wrought-iron grille with an inserted wooden cross, was draped with a black curtain. The holy grave was only visible during the cartage.
