The Calvary at the St. Lambertus Church in the Altestadt street in Düsseldorf 's Altstadt district is a historical group of figures.

description

The group of figures of the old Calvary consisted of seven figures made of sandstone. At the foot of the central cross on the left were the captain and Longinus, on the right Mary and John. In 1887 this group of figures was broken off and replaced by a new one. After 1887, a new calvary was built at the St. Lambertus Church in Düsseldorf, created by Anton Josef Reiss . The two figures of Longinus and the captain were omitted. Three crosses rise above a landscape plinth, on which the figures of Christ and the two thieves are located. At the feet of the central cross are the figures of Mary and John. The “general formal language of the crucifixion scene is Gothic [...] but it is Gothic with an Italian accent”. This group of figures is characterized by an “ambivalent character”. Because the group of figures is reminiscent of the revival of monumental art at the beginning of the 19th century, according to Trier this could also be “late Nazarene”. According to Trier, however, the thief figures show “younger traits of expressive naturalism”.
