Anton Josef Reiss (born October 30, 1835 in Düsseldorf ; † January 31, 1900 there ) was a sculptor from Düsseldorf.

Live and act

Reiss (also Reiss) was the third child of Carl Peter Josef Reiss, a professional carter at the time , and Sophie Henriette Fink. His sisters Luise and Christine had been born before him. He received his training as a sculptor from Julius Bayerle (1826–1873), who later set up the first atelier for sculpture at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Wilhelm von Schadow . Before that, Reiss had attended the elementary class of Josef Wintergerst at the art academy in 1851 . He also attended Karl Ferdinand Sohn's class of antiquities from 1854 to 1855 and received lessons in anatomy and proportions from Heinrich Mücke . Josef Reiss was a member of the artists' association Malkasten and had his studio in the mid-1870s at Klosterstrasse 88, where he took in his widowed mother. At the beginning of the 1880s, Reiss had built a house on the corner plot of Kurfürstenstrasse 28 at Klosterstrasse 128. The owners of the neighboring house were among others the family of Gustav Rutz .

He devoted his work entirely to the church, his art was stylistically related to the art of the Nazarenes . For the marble Pietà for St. Gereon in Cologne, he orientated himself on "Italian (n) models, [ see above ] on the famous picture work by Michelangelo in St. Peter ".
