Kalyves ( Greek Καλύβες [ kaˈliːvɛs ], in another transcription also Kalives ( f. Pl. )) Is a local community ( topiki kinotita τοπική κοινότητα) in the municipality of Armeni in the municipality of Apokoronas on the Greek island of Crete . View of Kalyves from the west

Kalyves is about 20 km east of Chania . In the center, the Xidhe Bach coming from Armeni flows into Souda Bay , west of the Kiliaris from Stylos . The Old National Road runs right through the town and is also its main street. At the same time, the new national road connects Kalyves with the other cities and tourist centers on the north coast. On the eastern edge of the village is the small fishing and sport boat harbor, which is adjacent to the city beach. Another beach is at the western exit of the village towards Kalami . The public buses of the KTEL Chania- Rethymno serve the town center regularly with connections to Chania, Gavalochori and Vamos . The long-distance buses on the Chania-Rethymno- Heraklion line stop at the entrance to the new national road.

Street in Kalyves

In ancient times, a port in the western city-state of Aptera is said to have been near Kalyves . As everywhere on the Apokoronas, there is currently a dynamic development in Kalyves from an agrarian village to a tourist center. The municipality takes this into account by constantly improving the infrastructure. In 2008 the Platia was renewed with the old water mill . In 2009 a promenade was laid out between the two beaches. The building boom that began around the turn of the millennium did not stop at Kalyves either. Many everyday shops have given way to real estate agents . Immigrants from Northern Europe, especially from Great Britain , the Netherlands , but also from Germany , settle permanently in the area and increasingly shape the image of the place. In 2001, 1419 inhabitants lived on an area of 9.128 km².

Kalyves has an elementary school. The new large church is dedicated to Agia Paraskevi .
