Kamaran ( Arabic كمران Kamarān ) is the largestisland in Yemen in the Red Sea .

geography

Kamaran is a shelf island on the shallow continental shelf of the Arabian Peninsula , and is surrounded on three sides by coral reefs. The southern end of the island, Ra's al-Yaman, is only two kilometers from the Yemeni mainland at Ra's al-Bayād on the Salif peninsula and separated from it by the Kamaran Passage. The island is largely flat with a few hills to the south. The highest point is the Jabal Yaman, with a height of 24 meters.

The population is 2465 on the cut-off date of the census of December 16, 2004. The main town is Kamaran on the east coast, opposite the Yemeni mainland, and is blessed with a natural harbor. Other communities are Makram (مكرم) on the west coast and Yaman in the extreme south.

administration

Kamaran forms one of the 26 districts of the al-Hudaida governorate .

history

Kamaran had been inhabited for centuries when the Portuguese established a base on the island in the 16th century. In the 19th century the island was part of the Ottoman Empire and served as a quarantine station for Mecca pilgrims.

In June 1915, during the First World War , the British took the island with troops from Aden and from then on appointed commissioners for the administration of the island without formally taking possession of it. In 1923 the Treaty of Lausanne , which sealed the end of the Ottoman Empire, left the island's future open. Great Britain continued to occupy the island despite protests from the Kingdom of Yemen , and administered it from the colony of Aden . In 1949, Britain formally determined that the governor of Aden would also be the governor of Kamaran, but the island was not incorporated into the colony.

On November 30, 1967, Kamaran was added to the former colony of Aden, the People's Republic of Yemen (South Yemen), on the occasion of the independence , but was occupied on October 6, 1972 by the geographically closer Arab Republic of Yemen .
