Black Sea coast north of Kamen Brjag

Kamen Bryag [ kamɛn brjak ] ( bulg . Камен бряг to German Steinufer ) is a small village on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, about 12 km north of Cape Kaliakra , the northern tip of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and the most eastern part of Bulgaria, as well as 100 km north of Varna .

location

The place is located in the Dobrich Oblast in the municipality of Kawarna , 18 km east of Kawarna.

Kamen Brjag is located on a cliff. It is the furthest east seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and has a wild, romantic rocky coast and no sandy beaches at all.

There is a small church at the entrance to the village, two restaurants and two grocery stores. From the town center to the coast there is a 600-800 m footpath across a rocky landscape (blooming red and yellow in spring). A little further north (approx. 15 km to almost the Romanian border ) there are also sandy beaches.

history

The medieval name Kamenik (Каменник) is not known for certain. Under the Turkish rule, the village was called Kaja Bey Koj (Кая бей кьой, literally: stone village of the Beys ). During the Romanian rule (from 1913 to 1940 the whole area belonged to Romania, see the history of Dobruja ) it was called Stanka (Стънка).

Some of the villagers are resettlers from the Balkan Mountains, others from Romania during the political turmoil of the 1940s (see: History of the Dobruja ).

The neighboring village Balgarewo (Българево) was a Gagauz -Dorf (Turkish language, Greek Orthodox population).

Attractions

Three kilometers south of the village is the nature and history reserve (archaeological excavation site) Jailata (Яйлата) with 4000 year old Thracian graves, an altar on which animals were sacrificed and stone houses. A Thracian sun altar was discovered at the entrance to the excavation site . Further north are the remains of a fortress from the early Byzantine period (5th century). The inaccessible area is home to rare plants and many rock caves can be reached from the water.

There are a number of megalithic monuments on the steep banks to the south and north of the village.

To the north-west of the village there is a large burial mound with Scythian graves.

Cape Kaliakra is 5 km south of the village. Next to it, in an oak forest, in the Taukliman nature reserve (along the Via Pontica), is the Russalka ("Mermaid") holiday village. During communist times, the French holiday club ( Club Méditerranée ) was an all-inclusive facility that was only accessible to the residents of the holiday club. Today the holiday complex is also open to visitors.

10 km further north are the fish-rich lakes Durankulak and Schabla (Durankulaksk esero, 45 hectares in size, just outside the village of Duranlak), 6 km from the Bulgarian-Romanian border, the main wintering area for the red-necked goose .
