Kamen Kalew (also written Kamen Kalev , Bulgarian Камен Калев ; * 1975 in Burgas , Bulgaria ) is a Bulgarian director.

Life

Kamen Kalew was born on the Black Sea in 1975 . After graduating from the French high school in Burgas, he studied cinematography for two years at the Bulgarian Film and Art School (NATFIZ) in Sofia . He then went to Paris , where he continued his studies at the famous French film school La fémis . In 2002 he graduated from the French university.

Kalew's first short films received invitations from the film festivals of Sarajevo , Berlin , New York and Stockholm . He is also the author of more than 60 commercial and musical clips.

In 2005 and 2007 Kalew and Dimitar Mitowski presented the productions Warnete Saeka (bulg. Върнете заека / dt. "Bring the hare back") and Loschijat saek (bulg. Лошият заек / dt. "The bad hare") at the Cannes Film Festival in front.

In 2009, Kalew's feature film debut Iztotschni piesi ( Bulgar . Източни пиеси / Ger . " Eastern Plays ") was included in the official program of the Cannes Film Festival, in the side series Quinzaine des réalisateurs . It was the first Bulgarian film production since 1990 to be shown in Cannes. The Bulgarian premiere took place on October 6, 2009 in Burgas. The film was also nominated in 2009 for the Lux film prize of the European Parliament . At the film festival in Estoril , Portugal , the film received the special prize of the jury. The Bulgarian-Swedish coproduction The Island, starring Laetitia Casta and Thure Lindhardt , received an invitation to the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs side series at the 64th Cannes International Film Festival .
