Kamjana Mohyla

Kamjana Mohyla ( Ukrainian Кам'яна Могила ; Russian Каменная могила Kamennaja Mogila ; in German "stone grave") is a group of up to 12 m high isolated sandstone blocks , which in the south of Ukraine on an area of about 3000 square meters near Myrne , 13 km northeast of Melitopol are scattered. Originally it was a sandbank of the Tethys Ocean , which today lies in the valley of the Molochna River .

The hill is criss-crossed by grottos and abrises , in and under which numerous rock carvings have been found. Most petroglyphs are barely noticeable due to weathering or are perceived as straight and curved lines. Sometimes images of bulls or goats are recognized. Some researchers also want to see mammoths and rhinos . But in contrast to the French caves or the Kapowa cave , it is difficult to recognize the pictures of Kamjana Mohyla. A multi-phase settlement at the foot of the hill is dated back to the Mesolithic . There is indirect evidence that the bulls in the pictures can be dated Mesolithic. The rock carvings of oxen in front of a plow and a loop of poles are Neolithic in nature.
