The comb flounders (Samaridae ( Latin : samara = seeds of the elm )) are a family of flatfish . They live in tropical and subtropical regions of the Indo-Pacific , especially in the deep sea.

They are rather small fish that reach lengths between 4.5 and 22 centimeters. The beginning of their dorsal fin is in front of their eyes. The pelvic fins are symmetrical. The lateral line organ can be well developed but also reduced. As is the case with the closely related American sole (Achiridae), the sole (Soleidae) and the dog's tongues (Cynoglossidae), a postcleithrum (a bone in the shoulder girdle ) is missing .
