history
The Perchtoldsdorf Beautification Association, founded in 1880, had a wooden observation tower built 7.5 meters high. The lookout point was officially opened on June 29, 1881. The wooden control room was named after Josef Hyrtl , a doctor and benefactor from Perchtoldsdorf. However, the control room had to be closed in 1890 due to dilapidation. The Lower Austrian Mountain Association took on the matter in cooperation with the local beautification association and built a new observation tower. The costs for this amounted to 2,200 guilders , most of which were raised from donations. After the old wooden observation tower was removed, the new iron tower was built in the summer of 1891. The new Josefswarte was officially opened on September 13, 1891. Until the opening of the adjacent Kammersteinerhütte in 1912, there was a wooden refuge between the four tower legs, which offered shelter for around 40 people.
